Windsurfing, kitesurfing and surfing in Sardinia

Sardinia is a paradise for kitesurfers and windsurfers – thanks to 2000 kilometres of coast and wind blowing from all directions. The northern and southern coasts offer especially fantastic wind conditions, and a steady stream of surfing schools are available. Nevertheless, the western coast has also become a haven for surfers, who will find several beautiful spots with perfect swell on La Paradisola.

Windsurfing and kitesurfing

Porto Pollo (also known as Porto Puddu)

Near Palau, this spot is renowned as one of the best windsurfing locations in Europe and is undoubtedly the best in Sardinia. The endless white sandy beaches, turquoise water and consistent winds mean it has a lot to boast about. Two winds ensure the perfect conditions: the hot Sahara wind Sirocco blows in from the south whilst the Mistral comes from the north-west. This area is less suitable for beginners.

Chia

With juniper-clad sand dunes and translucent, turquoise waters, Chia is also a top surfing destination in terms of its visual pull. The thermal Sirocco wind blowing in from the south ensures reliable conditions all summer long. When the Tra Montana wind blows down from the north, both windsurfers and surfers can look forward to impressive sets of waves rolling onto the shore. However, the Tra Montana is hardly ever present in summer and only occasionally makes itself known throughout the rest of the year.

Poetto

The kilometre-long beach in Cagliari is also popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers – Mistral and Scirocco cater for perfect wind conditions here. Poetto is great for both beginners and advanced surfers. There are a number of surf schools and even the odd surfing competition.

Surfing

For many surfers, Sardinia wouldn’t exactly spring to mind when they think of a proper swell. Nevertheless, especially the island’s west coast is a real treat for surfers. Board hire is available in Cagliari.

Portixeddu

A sheltered bay on the west coast, which is protected from the excessive Mistral wind.

Buggerru

A popular surfing spot on the west coast near Portixeddu, with north-west exposure and reliable conditions.

Porto Pino

Windsurfing spot below the offshore island Sant’Antioco, sheltered by a promontory.
