Villasimius – stunning beaches and nightlife in southern Sardinia

Villasimius is a charming fusion of picturesque beaches, hip nightlife and historical culture: the former fishing village on the south-west tip of Sardinia is guaranteed to impress with its bays, chic clubs and typical Sardinian way of life. The piazza at the heart of the village unveils the authentic, Mediterranean character of Villasimius – and inspired Ernst Jünger to write his novel Am Sarazenenturm here back in the 1960s. Dating back to the 17th century, the old Fortezza Vecchia fortress stands proudly over the harbour. Nowadays, it hosts art exhibitions for the public to admire.

A string of stunning beaches and secluded bays makes the stretch of coastline one of the most beautiful in Sardinia for those who enjoy a swim. Shopping fans will be delighted with the plethora of pretty little shops. Once the sun sets on Villasimius, the night owls emerge – in the many restaurants, bars and clubs, the Sardinian night often only ends as day breaks and the sun gently rises over the sea.

Especially in July and August, this is paradise for those looking for lively nightlife. Numerous hotels, restaurants, pizzerias and upmarket shops round off the leisure options.

A fortified fairytale: the Porto Giunco tower

South of Villasimius, visitors will find a very special viewing platform. The old Spanish defence tower of Porto Giunco is a good nine metres high and reveals sensational views of the coast. The journey there is equally spectacular – surrounded by the wild green of the Sardinian flora, an unspoiled hiking path leads the way to the old Saracen tower.

Discovering shipwrecks and Roman tombs

Diving goggles on and we’re off to very special underwater destinations: boats leave Villasimius on diving excursions to the offshore islands such as Isola die Càvoli: unique flora and fauna in a nature reserve and sunken shipwrecks are waiting to be discovered.

Those who want to uncover the ancient roots of Sardinia will find many testimonies of fascinating past cultures in the surroundings of Villasimius. A Neolithic fairy tomb in Spiaggia del Riso, remains of the Phoenician period in the Cuccureddus archaeological site and mysterious giants’ tombs bring the past back to life.

Our tip: for an overview of all the ancient eras, head to the Archaeological Museum of Villasimius.
