Costa Smeralda

Costa Smeralda – the magic of 80 romantic bays

Costa Smeralda owes its name to its emerald green waters. Idyllic bays, artistically shaped granite formations, rich green maquis and a touch of the jet-set – this gem on the east coast of Sardinia unites the power of nature with a chic way of life. Until the 1960s, all that was to see here was grazing land and some sheep happily munching away – until Aga Kahn discovered it and built the first hotel in Cala di Volpe, following a specially designed Neo-Sardinian style. Since then, this wonderfully diverse part of the coast in the north-west Sardinia has not only become a playground for the rich and beautiful, but also natural lovers and those in search of peace. Almost 80 mostly small bays, some rocky and secluded, others expansive with fine sand, continue to fascinate inhabitants and tourists alike.

A selection of the dream beaches along Costa Smeralda

Spiaggia Capriccioli

This beach deserves its title as one of the most legendary and beautiful in the whole of Costa Smeralda: Spiaggia Capriccioli is a picturesque peninsula replete with olive trees, mastic bushes and lush green maquis. Gently eroded granite rocks form bizarrely beautiful shapes and the crystal-clear water shimmers in a kaleidoscope of colours from blue to green. The two-part bay is perfect for children, as the beach gently slopes into the sea. Very crowded during high season. A paid car park is available.

Spiaggia Romazzino

Beach paradise meets VIP lifestyle: this stunning bay with red shimmering granite rocks and iridescent water is an eye-catcher in all respects. It’s no wonder, then, that this prestigious panorama is also home to a luxury hotel.

Grande Pevero

Another picture-perfect beach on Costa Smeralda: the Gulf of Pero is home to this crescent-shaped dream beach with impressive turquoise waters. The fine, white golden sand is a favourite spot for many sun worshippers during high season. Lounger hire is available. Sailors and yacht owners are drawn to the dazzling beautiful bay from fashionable neighbouring areas like Porto Rotondo.
