Isola di Tavolara: fairytale scenery and hiking paradise

With its striking rocky ridge, the island has become a true landmark. Ten minutes from Porto San Paolo lies this unspoiled island with less than 20 inhabitants – all of whom descend from a self-proclaimed royal family who was given the island by the real Sardinian King Carlo Alberto at the beginning of the 19th century. But it's not just its history that is intriguing – the island is also guaranteed to stun with its untouched nature. Rare birds come here to breed in peace, goats and mouflon sheep happily chew the cud amidst maquis shrubs and mastic bushes. For daredevils, Punto Cannone offers the ultimate challenge: at 565 metres, reaching the highest point of Isola di Tavolara requires a good deal of skill and a head for heights. It’s more than worth it for the magnificent view at the top. Inexperienced climbers can also hire a climbing guide to accompany them.
