13.04.2010:
La Sagra degli Agrumi
An important Sardinian tradition of celebrating the citrus fruit season takes place in the form of the Sargra Degli Agrumi festival. For three days at the beginning of the Spring season, oranges and lemons and all manner of traditional harvest folklore are on display for the visitors of southeastern Sardinia. The oranges of Muravera are known as a high quality product all over Sardinia. Traditionally, the oranges are only picked when at the height of ripeness , thus offering a fragrant boquet and a sugar-sweet taste. In the Sardinian culture, the peel of the orange is used as a major ingredient for a variety of sweets. Citrus fruits harvested here are also used to compliment the flavor of local fish dishes.
In the three days of the festival it is possible to try different qualities of citrus fruit and to discover other food products and hand crafts which are local to this region and to Sardinia. The floats in the traditional parade are decorated with natural garnishings, and are pulled by tractors and giant bulls. Colorful fruit hangs from the bronze-tipped horns of the bulls, and along the carriage of the floats.
The parade is distinguished by an air of folklore, giving the visitor the possibility to get to know the traditional and unique customs of Sardinia. Before and after the parade, traditional dancing and music performances can be enjoyed in the Piazza Europa. For those lucky enough to visit Sardinia at this time, the festival can provide a connection between the colors of the earth's harvest and the meaning of a true festival.
