Costumes

"The Most Beautiful Attire in the Mediterranean"

The traditional costumes of Sardinia are richly colored with embroidery and expensive jewelry crafted from Spanish and Moorish coins-a display of wealth that belies the simple lifestyle of these villagers.

While each of the costumes is distinct, all share certain commonalities. The women traditionally wear a veil, a shroud or shawl, a long pleated skirt, and an embroidered apron. The men are uniformly dressed in a "birritta" or Sardinian cap along with a skirt-like doublet and black, hand-woven pantalets made from virgin sheep''s wool.

Traditional Sardinian dress remains an integral part of the "Sagre," folk festivals to remember the holy. These festivals offer participants the opportunity to showcase their costumes before an enthusiastic audience. As a guest on the island, you too can bear witness to the colorful festivals that take place year-round.
