Sardinia is not just a beautiful island in the Mediterranean, spoiled by the sun and bathed by the sea. Sardinia, the island of the Nuraghi, is also a land of arts, rich in impressive examples of painting, sculpture and architecture.
We would like to present two of the most significant examples of the sacral art of the Middle Ages to you: on one hand, one of the altars of San Filippo Neri in the Castelsardo Cathedral near Sassari, bedecked with unique carved woodwork; on another the incomparable façade of the Romanesque church of Saccargia, a jewel of European architecture amidst the fruitful plain of Codrongianus in northern Sardinia. Historical sources date the church from the year 1114. The alternating arrangement of black and white stones follows the model of Tuscan architecture from the region of Pisa, Lucca and Pistoia. The interior walls of the apse were decorated with frescoes during the 13th century, the same time that the portico was executed - absolutely original, without any Tuscan precedent.
